Voter support for PEI Green Party reaches highest level to date

  • Voter support for the PEI Liberal Party and the Green Party remains even this quarter
  • Satisfaction with the performance of the provincial government led by the governing Liberal Party is stable
  • Peter Bevan-Baker of the Green Party continues to be the preferred leader in the province


HALIFAX, NS September 6, 2018: Voter support for the Prince Edward Island Liberal Party and the Green Party continues to be even this quarter, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, just under four in ten decided voters support the PEI Liberal Party this quarter (35%, compared with 34% in May 2018), while four in ten voters back the Green Party (38%, compared with 33%). Preference for the Progressive Conservatives now stands at 20 percent (compared with 26%), while seven percent of PEI residents prefer the New Democratic Party (unchanged).

One-fifth of Islanders are undecided (20%, compared with 23% three months ago), while six percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 5%), and two percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (compared with 4%).

With regards to government satisfaction, one-half of PEI residents are satisfied (49%, compared with 52% three months ago), while nearly the same number of residents are dissatisfied (48%, compared with 42%). The number of residents who do not offer a definite opinion on the matter rests at two percent (down from 7%).

In terms of leader preference, one-quarter of PEI residents express their support for Premier Wade MacLauchlan (25%, compared with 24% in May 2018), while four in ten prefer Peter Bevan-Baker of the Green Party (38%, compared with 39%). One in six residents support James Aylward of the PC Party (16%, compared with 17%), while five percent back Joe Byrne of NDP (compared with 4%). Finally, five percent prefer none of these leaders (compared with 3%), and one in ten residents do not offer an opinion on the matter (11%, compared with 13%).

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 300 adult Prince Edward Islanders, conducted from August 2 to 21, 2018, with overall results accurate to within ± 5.7 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
