Three party tie in NL in terms of voter intentions

  • Top three parties in NL are tied in terms of voter intentions
  • A large majority of residents continue to be dissatisfied with the performance of the Liberal government
  • Preference for Premier Dwight Ball remains low this quarter

HALIFAX, NS September 8, 2016: The top three parties in NL are in a three-way tie in terms of voter intentions, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Specifically, one in three decided voters back the governing Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party (34%, compared with 27% in May 2016), while 33 percent support the Progressive Conservative Party (compared with 34%). Meanwhile, one-third prefer the New Democratic Party (32%, compared with 38%).

One-quarter of residents are undecided (23%, compared with 25%), while two percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 3%), and seven percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (compared with 8%).

Satisfaction with the performance of the Liberal government is consistent and currently stands at 17 percent (compared with 21% three months ago), while eight in ten are dissatisfied (81%, up from 75%). Meanwhile, two percent do not offer a definite opinion (compared with 3%).

Premier Dwight Ball’s popularity remains low and currently stands at 17 percent (compared with 18% three months ago), while one-third support Paul Davis of the PC Party (32%, compared with 35%), and preference for NDP leader Earle McCurdy stands at 24 percent (compared with 22%). One in seven (13%, compared with 17%) prefer none of these leaders, and one in seven have no definite opinion at this time (14%, up from 8%).

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 402 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from August 8 to August 31, 2016, with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
