Support grows for NL NDP
• Support for Liberals declines while NDP gains in voter intentions.
• Dissatisfaction with the Tories performance of the provincial government is up this quarter.
• Newfoundlander and Labradorians continue to prefer Dwight Ball for premier.
HALIFAX, NS June 8, 2015: Support for the NL NDP increased this quarter while support for the Liberals is down, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, one-half of decided voters back the Liberal Party (50% down from 56% in February, 2015), while two in ten support the NDP (22%, up from 13%). Meanwhile, support for the governing Progressive Conservative Party rests at 27 percent (compared with 31%), while one percent prefer the Green Party (compared with less than 1%), and less than one percent favour the Labrador Party (unchanged). The number of residents who are undecided rests at 22 percent (compared with 23%), while three percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 2%), and four percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (compared with 5%).
In terms of satisfaction with government, less than one-half (47%, down from 56% three months ago) of residents are satisfied with the performance of the government. Meanwhile, nearly one-half (46%, up from 33%) of residents are dissatisfied, while seven percent do not offer a definite opinion (compared with 12%).
Premier Paul Davis’ personal popularity rests at 26 percent (compared with 29% three months ago), while over four in ten support Dwight Ball of the Liberal Party (43%, compared with 47%). Preference for newly elected NDP leader Earle McCurdy stands at 18 percent (up from 9%), while one in seven prefer none of these leaders, someone else, or have no definite opinion at this time (14%, compared with 15%).
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 804 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from May 11 to June 1, 2015 with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
