Support for Muskrat Falls development continues to decline and, for the first time, less than a majority support the project
- Less than one-half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents support the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project development, representing a notable decline since May 2015 and May 2016
- For the first time since tracking began in 2013, the Muskrat Falls development is not supported by the majority of NL residents
HALIFAX, NS January 4, 2017: Support for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project development has declined in the past six months, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, just under one-half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents (45%, down from 54% in May 2016) completely or mostly support the Muskrat Falls development, while one-half (48%, up from 35%) mostly or completely oppose, and seven percent either do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter (down from 11%). This is the first time since tracking began in 2013 that the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project development is not supported by a majority of residents.
“Given the continuing escalation in the cost of Muskrat Falls, and negative public statements from Nalcor’s CEO, it is hardly surprising that support for this project would be declining,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates.
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 401 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from November 8 to December 1, 2016, with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points in 95 out of 100 times.
