HALIFAX, NS June 20, 2017: Support for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project development has reached its lowest level since tracking began in February 2013, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, four in ten Newfoundland and Labrador residents (40%, compared with 45% in November 2016, and down from 54% in May 2016) completely or mostly support the Muskrat Falls development, while one-half (49%, compared with 48% in November 2016) mostly or completely oppose, and 12 percent either do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter (up from 7%). This represents the lowest level of support for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project development since tracking began in 2013, as well as a pattern of continual decline since May 2015.
“The continued decline in support for Muskrat Falls is perhaps not surprising given the rapidly rising costs of this project to consumers in the province,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “It is likely that support for this project will continue to decline until the electricity begins to flow from Muskrat Falls.”
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 401 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from May 4 to 31, 2017, with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points in 95 out of 100 times.
