Slight majority of residents support keeping fluoride out of the Moncton water supply
HALIFAX, NS November 28, 2017: The Moncton Council recently voted to keep fluoride out of the region’s water supply, maintaining the decision made in 2011 to suspend adding the substance to the city’s water. While public opinion is generally split on this issue, a slight majority of residents support keeping fluoride out of the Moncton water supply, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, just over one-half (53%) of residents in the Moncton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) support keeping fluoride out of the city’s water supply. Meanwhile, four in ten (39%) oppose keeping fluoride out of the water supply, and one in ten (8%) do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter. Of note, younger residents are more likely than their older counterparts to support keeping fluoride out of the Moncton water supply.
“The results underscore the contentious nature of this issue among those living in the Moncton area,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates Inc. “While the recent Council decision aligns with the majority opinion on this issue, more work is likely needed to convince those opposed to the decision that it was the right decision for the community.”
These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of 400 Moncton (Census Metropolitan Area [CMA]) adult residents, 18 years of age or older, conducted from October 20 to November 6, 2017. Overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
