HALIFAX, NS May 30, 2018: A majority of residents in the Greater Moncton area continue to support the amalgamation of Dieppe, Riverview and Moncton into a single municipal unit, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Specifically, just under six in ten (57%, compared with 59% in May 2017) residents in the Moncton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) completely or mostly support the amalgamation into one municipal unit, while just under four in ten (36%, up from 28%) completely or mostly oppose. Meanwhile, four percent neither support nor oppose (4%, compared with 7%), and three percent do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter (3%, compared with 6%).

Support is notably lower in Riverview, as two-thirds (67%, compared with 50% one year ago) of Riverview residents oppose amalgamation, and only one-quarter (27%, compared with 38%) express support. In all other areas, there is a notably higher level of support for amalgamation. Specifically, two-thirds of residents from Moncton (66%, compared with 64%) and just over six in ten Dieppe residents (63%, compared with 65%) support amalgamation, while one-half (50%, compared with 56%) of residents in other areas of the CMA express support in this regard.

“Consistent with previous research, the majority of those living within the Greater Moncton area continue to support the amalgamation of the three current municipalities into a single municipality,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “Only those living in Riverview oppose such an amalgamation.”

These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of 400 Moncton (Census Metropolitan Area [CMA]) adult residents, 18 years of age or older, conducted from April 18 to May 2, 2018. Overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
