Public divided concerning the amalgamation of Rothesay, Quispamsis, Grand Bay-Westfield, and Saint John
HALIFAX, NS May 23, 2017: Residents in the Saint John Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) are divided concerning the amalgamation of Rothesay, Quispamsis, Grand Bay-Westfield, and Saint John into a single municipal unit, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, four in ten (42%) completely or mostly support the amalgamation into one municipal unit, while a similar number (43%) of residents completely or mostly oppose. Meanwhile, less than one in ten (7%) neither support nor oppose, and one in ten (8%) do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter.
Support differs across the region, as just over one-half (54%) of residents in the City of Saint John support amalgamation, and three in ten (30%) express opposition. In all other areas, the majority of residents oppose amalgamation. Specifically, three in ten residents (28%) in other areas of the CMA support amalgamation, while six in ten (60%) express opposition.
“Given the economic and population challenges facing the City of Saint John, the issue of amalgamation has been raised in the past,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates Inc. “It is interesting to gauge public opinion of such an amalgamation, with the majority of those in the city currently in favour and the majority of those outside the city opposed.”
These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of 400 Saint John (Census Metropolitan Area (CMA)) adult residents, 18 years of age or older, conducted from April 19 to May 4, 2017. Overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
