Nova Scotians oppose the reduction of financial support to the film industry

• A majority of Nova Scotians oppose the reduction of financial support to the film industry
in the province.
• Residents in Halifax and Cape Breton are more likely to oppose the reduction of financial support to the film industry, as are women and lower income households.

HALIFAX, NS June 17, 2015:  A majority of Nova Scotians oppose recent changes in the provincial tax credit that saw a reduction of financial support to the film industry in the province, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Six in ten residents (60%) completely or mostly oppose the decision to reduce financial support to the film industry in Nova Scotia, while one-third (34%) mostly or completely support the measure, and five percent do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter.

Opinions on the reduction of financial incentives to the film industry differ by region and demographics. Specifically, opposition is higher among Halifax and Cape Breton residents, as well as younger residents.

“It is clear that the film industry in Nova Scotia has won the public opinion war with regards to the changes implemented by the Liberal Government in its support for the industry,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “These findings may, to some extent, explain the decrease in satisfaction with the performance of the provincial government in the last quarter.”

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a telephone sample of 401 adult Nova Scotians, conducted from May 13 to June 1, 2015, with overall results accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
