NL PC Party retains lead in terms of voter support this quarter
- Party support is stable, allowing the PC Party to retain its lead in terms of voter preference
- Dissatisfaction with the performance of the Liberal government has declined this quarter
- Paul Davis of the PC Party retains his lead in terms of leader preference
HALIFAX, NS June 7, 2017: After becoming the most preferred political party in Newfoundland and Labrador three months ago, the Progressive Conservative Party has retained its lead this quarter, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, one-third of decided voters back the governing Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party (34%, compared with 33% in February 2017), while four in ten support the Progressive Conservative Party (40%, compared with 39%), and one-quarter prefer the New Democratic Party (24%, compared with 26%).
One-third of residents are undecided (32%, up from 24%), while two percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 1%), and five percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (unchanged).
After a decline last quarter, satisfaction with the performance of the Liberal government is stable and currently stands at 28 percent (compared with 26% three months ago). At the same time, dissatisfaction declined, as two-thirds are dissatisfied (65%, down from 71%), and seven percent do not offer a definite opinion on the matter (up from 2%).
With regards to leader preference, support for Premier Dwight Ball is stable and currently rests at 23 percent (compared with 21% three months ago), while just under four in ten residents support Paul Davis of the PC Party (36%, compared with 33%). Preference for NDP leader Earle McCurdy has declined and currently rests at 16 percent (down from 23%). Meanwhile, one in eight prefer none of these leaders (13%, compared with 14%), and one in ten have no definite opinion at this time (12%, compared with 9%).
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 804 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from May 4 to June 1, 2017, with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
