NL Liberal Party well ahead in post-election survey

  • Two in three decided voters prefer the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Solid majority satisfied with the performance of the Liberal government
  • Dwight Ball remains the public’s preferred choice for Premier

HALIFAX, NS  March 11, 2015: The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador enjoys considerable post-election support, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Specifically, two-thirds of decided voters back the governing Newfoundland and Labrador Liberal Party (66%, compared with 67% in November 2015), while support for the Progressive Conservative Party rests at 23 per cent (compared with 22%). Meanwhile, one in ten back the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party (11%, compared with 10%).

The number of residents who are undecided stands at 21 percent (compared with 23%), while three percent refuse to state a preference (unchanged), and a similar number either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (3%, unchanged).

In terms of satisfaction with the government, over six in ten (64%) residents are satisfied with the performance of the newly elected Liberal government, while one-quarter of residents are dissatisfied (26%). Meanwhile eight percent do not offer a definite opinion, and three percent say it is too soon to tell.

New Premier Dwight Ball’s popularity rests at 53 percent (compared with 50% three months ago), while three in ten support Paul Davis of the PC Party (29%, compared with 27%). Preference for NDP leader Earle McCurdy stands at eight percent (compared with 11%), while five percent (compared with 3%) prefer none of these leaders, and six percent have no definite opinion at this time (compared with 8%).

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 813 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from February 4 to March 9, 2016 with overall results for the province accurate to within ±3.4 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
