NL Liberal Party Extends Lead in Voter Intentions

HALIFAX: The NL Liberal Party continues to be the preferred party, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, six in ten decided voters back the Liberal Party (58% compared with 53% three months ago), while one-quarter support the governing Progressive Conservative Party (26%, compared with 29%). Meanwhile, support for the NDP rests at 15 percent (compared with 16%), while one percent prefer the Green Party (unchanged), and less than one percent favour the Labrador Party (compared with one percent). The number of residents who are undecided rests at 31 percent (compared with 29%), while three percent refuse to state a preference (compared with 2%), and five percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (unchanged).

In terms of government satisfaction, six in ten (62%, compared with 64% in May 2014) residents are satisfied with the performance of the current government. Meanwhile, one-quarter (25%, compared with 24%) of residents are dissatisfied, while 12 percent do not offer a definite opinion (compared with 11%), and one percent believe it is too soon to tell (unchanged).

Interim Premier Tom Marshall’s personal popularity rests at 28 percent (compared with 33% three months ago), while support for Dwight Ball of the Liberal Party is stable (40%, compared with 38%). Preference for Lorraine Michael of the NDP rests at 13 percent (compared with 11%), while two in ten either prefer none of these leaders, or have no definite opinion at this time (20%, compared with 18%).

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 802 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from August 7 to September 1, 2014 with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
