NL Government Satisfaction Improves With New Leader
HALIFAX: There has been a marked improvement in overall satisfaction with the performance of the provincial PC government with new leader Tom Marshall, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, almost six in ten (57%, up from 42% three months ago) residents are either completely or mostly satisfied with the performance of the current government. Meanwhile, two in ten (20%, down from 52%) residents are dissatisfied, while 13 percent do not offer a definite opinion (compared with 6%), and 11 percent believe it is too soon to tell.
In terms of voter support, just over one-half of decided voters continue to back the Liberal Party (53%, compared with 52% in November 2013), while support for the governing Progressive Conservative Party is also stable (33%, compared with 29%). Meanwhile, support for the NDP has declined again (13%, down from 19%), and less than one percent prefer the Green Party (unchanged). The number of residents who are undecided rests at 26 percent (compared with 25%), while three percent refuse to state a preference (unchanged), and four percent either support none of the parties or do not plan to vote (unchanged).
Interim Premier Tom Marshall’s personal popularity rests at 32 percent (up from 25% three months ago when Kathy Dunderdale was PC leader), while preference for Lorraine Michael of the NDP as Premier of the province has declined (11%, down from 18%). Support for Dwight Ball of the Liberal Party is stable (38%, compared to 36%), while two in ten like either none of these leaders or have no definite opinion at this time (19%, compared with 21%).
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 400 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from February 11 to March 2, 2014 with overall results for the province accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
