Majority of Nova Scotians support re-instatement of minority ridings
- Six in ten Nova Scotians support the re-instatement of the four minority ridings for Acadians and African Nova Scotians that were eliminated in the previous electoral boundary review
- One-quarter of residents oppose the re-instatement of these minority ridings
- Support for this action is higher among women
HALIFAX, NS March 21, 2017: The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal recently ruled that the elimination of the four minority ridings for Acadians and African Nova Scotians in the previous electoral boundary review was unconstitutional and would have to be re-instated. A majority of Nova Scotians support the re-instatement of these minority ridings, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, six in ten (61%) residents completely or mostly support the re-instatement of the previously removed minority ridings, while one-quarter (23%) completely or mostly oppose this action, and one in six (16%) do not know or do not have an opinion on the matter.
The level of support for the re-instatement of these minority ridings is consistent across the province, while across the population, support is higher among women than men.
“Despite having substantially fewer voters than other ridings in the province, there is majority support in Nova Scotia for the re-instatement of the four minority ridings eliminated in the last electoral boundary review,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “This will increase pressure on the government to address this issue in the short-term.”
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a telephone sample of 403 adult Nova Scotians, conducted from February 2 to 28, 2017, with overall results accurate to within ± 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
