HALIFAX, NS March 27, 2018: Six in ten Nova Scotia residents report having experienced bullying in their lifetime, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
To better understand the prevalence in Nova Scotia, residents were asked when, if at all, they last experienced bullying. Overall, six in ten (58%) Nova Scotians report having been bullied, with three in ten (30%) having most recently experienced bullying within the last five years, and a similar number of residents (28%) having most recently experienced such an incident five years ago or more. Meanwhile, four in ten (42%) residents have never been bullied.
Across Atlantic Canada, the likelihood of experiencing bullying in Nova Scotia is similar to that of Prince Edward Island (55%), but is slightly higher than that of Newfoundland and Labrador (47%), and New Brunswick (45%). Across the population of Nova Scotia, women, and residents under 35 years of age are more likely to have most recently experienced bullying within the last five years.
“It is perhaps not unexpected that so many adults across the region have been bullied at one time or another,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “What is surprising is the higher incidence bullying experienced by younger adults relative to their older counterparts.”
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a telephone sample of 384 adult Nova Scotians, conducted from February 1 to 25, 2018, with overall results accurate to within ± 5.0 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
