Majority of Halifax residents continue to disagree with the removal of Edward Cornwallis’ name from public infrastructure
HALIFAX, NS November 28, 2017: Amid the recent debate regarding how Halifax honours its founder Edward Cornwallis, a majority of Halifax residents continue to disagree that his name should be removed from public infrastructure in the city, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Specifically, nearly six in ten (56%, compared with 58% in May 2017) residents in the Halifax Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) disagree that Edward Cornwallis’ name should be removed from public infrastructure, such as parks, buildings, and street signs. Meanwhile, three in ten (31%, unchanged) agree that the name should be removed, seven percent (compared with 4%) neither agree nor disagree, and six percent (compared with 7%) do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter. Of note, men and residents with higher household incomes are more likely than women and those with lower household incomes to disagree that Edward Cornwallis’ name should be removed from public infrastructure.
“Despite the continuing debate related to the call to remove the Edward Cornwallis name from public infrastructure, a clear majority of Halifax residents do not agree with such a decision,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates Inc. “Interestingly, those disagreeing with the removal of Edward Cornwallis’ name have a more definitive opinion on this issue than those who agree with such a decision.”
These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of 400 Halifax (Census Metropolitan Area [CMA]) adult residents, 18 years of age or older, conducted from October 19 to November 14, 2017. Overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
