Incidence of racial discrimination in line with proportion of visible minorities in PE
- Overall, one in ten Prince Edward Island residents have experienced racial discrimination, with seven percent of residents having been discriminated within the last five years, and five percent having experienced such an incident five years ago or more
- The likelihood of experiencing racial discrimination in Prince Edward Island is similar to that of New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador, but is slightly lower than that of Nova Scotia
- Across the Prince Edward Island population, the likelihood of having most recently experienced racial discrimination within the last five years is elevated among residents under 35 years of age
HALIFAX, NS March 22, 2018: One in ten Prince Edward Island residents report having experienced racial discrimination in their lifetime, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
To better understand the prevalence in Prince Edward Island, residents were asked when, if at all, they last experienced racial discrimination. Overall, one in ten (12%) Islanders indicate that they have been racially discriminated, with seven percent having most recently experienced racial discrimination within the last five years, and five percent having most recently experienced such an incident five years ago or more. Meanwhile, nine in ten (88%) of residents have never been racially discriminated.
Across Atlantic Canada, the likelihood of experiencing racial discrimination in Prince Edward Island is similar to that of New Brunswick (16%), and Newfoundland and Labrador (13%), but is lower than that of Nova Scotia (22%). Across the population of Prince Edward Island, residents under 35 years of age are more likely than their older counterparts to have most recently experienced racial discrimination within the last five years.
“While on the surface, the percentage of those who have experienced racial discrimination appears low, it must be remembered that the percentage of visible minorities in Prince Edward Island is also low,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “The results suggest, most, if not all, of those in visible minorities have faced some form of racial discrimination in the past.”
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a telephone sample of 291 adult Prince Edward Island residents, conducted from February 2 to 28, 2018, with overall results accurate to within ± 5.7 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
