Fredericton residents evenly split on the introduction of ‘pace car’ program in the area
- Just under one-half of Fredericton residents support the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program in the area, while one-half of residents oppose introduction of such a program
- Support for the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program is higher among women and residents with lower household incomes
HALIFAX, NS May 29, 2018: Public opinion is split on the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program in the Fredericton area, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
In an effort to make roads safer, a ‘pace car’ program is being considered in the Fredericton area. ‘Pace cars’ would be clearly marked, and strictly obey the speed limits, encouraging others to do the same. The program would begin with city vehicles, eventually expanding to include volunteer vehicles. All things considered, just under one-half (47%) of Fredericton residents completely or mostly support the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program in the area. Meanwhile, one-half (49%) of residents completely or mostly oppose the introduction of such a program, and five percent do not know or do not have an opinion on the matter. Of note, support for the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program is higher among women, and those with lower household incomes, while opposition is more likely among men and those with higher household incomes.
“It is evident that the introduction of a ‘pace car’ program in an effort to make roads safer would be highly divisive among residents in Fredericton,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates. “Indeed, there is a clear need for further public information about this program prior to any introduction, and perhaps a trial to demonstrate the possible impacts of such a program.”
These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of 401 Fredericton (Census Agglomeration [CA]) adult residents, 18 years of age or older, conducted from April 19 to May 2, 2018. Overall results are accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
