Fredericton consumer confidence and satisfaction with City Council trending downward

  • Consumer confidence in Fredericton has slightly declined this quarter, and is notably below levels observed one year ago
  • The level of satisfaction with the performance of Council continues its declining trend under Mayor Mike O’Brien’s leadership, reaching a record low in this regard

HALIFAX, NS August 16, 2018: Consumer confidence in Fredericton has slightly declined this quarter, according to the most recent Urban Report survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. (CRA). Specifically, consumer confidence among Fredericton residents is at 103.0, compared with 106.4 in May 2018. Overall, consumer confidence has been trending downward since reaching record levels one year ago.

Although a majority of residents remain satisfied with the performance of Fredericton Council, satisfaction continues its downward trend under the leadership of Mayor Mike O’Brien, dropping nearly 20 percentage points since November 2017. Specifically, just under six in ten (57%, compared with 64% in May 2018, and down from 75% in November 2017) Fredericton residents are satisfied with the performance of Council. Of note, this level of satisfaction is the lowest observed since tracking began in August 2013.

These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent telephone survey of adult residents and consists of 400 Halifax CMA, 400 Saint John CMA, 300 Moncton CMA, and 400 Fredericton CA residents, conducted from July 19 to August 8, 2018, with overall results for each accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points for Halifax, Saint John, and Fredericton, and ±5.7 percentage points for Moncton, 95 out of 100 times. The survey results for government satisfaction are based on 400 Halifax CMA residents (±4.9 percentage points, 95% confidence level), 225 City of Saint John residents (±6.5 percentage points), 149 City of Moncton residents (±8.0 percentage points), and 296 City of Fredericton residents (±5.7 percentage points).
