Federal Liberals Hold Comfortable Lead over Other Parties in Atlantic Canada
- The Liberal Party continues to be the preferred party in Atlantic Canada.
- Majority of Atlantic Canadians are satisfied with the performance of the federal government.
- Justin Trudeau of the Liberal Party continues to be the preferred leader as Prime Minister of Canada.
HALIFAX, NS September 14, 2016: The federal Liberal Party has maintained a wide lead in terms of voting intentions in Atlantic Canada, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.
Three-quarters of decided voters in Atlantic Canada support the Liberal Party of Canada (74%, up from 70% three months ago), while one in six prefer the Conservative Party of Canada (16%, unchanged). Meanwhile, backing for the NDP stands at seven percent (down from 10%), while three percent prefer the Green Party of Canada (compared with 4%). Three in ten (31%, compared with 33%) residents in the region are undecided, refuse to state a preference, or do not plan to vote.
Meanwhile, a majority of Atlantic Canadians are satisfied with the performance of the federal government. Specifically, three-quarters of residents (74%, up from 69% in May 2016) are satisfied in this regard, while two in ten are dissatisfied (20%, compared with 22%), and five percent do not offer a definite opinion (down from 9%), while one percent believe it’s too soon to tell (unchanged).
In terms of leader preference, support for Justin Trudeau of the Liberal Party of Canada currently stands at 65 percent (up from 61% in May 2016). Meanwhile, preference for interim leader Rona Ambrose of the Conservative Party of Canada is stable (11%, unchanged), while backing for Thomas Mulcair of the NDP decreased to six percent (down from 9%) and Elizabeth May of the Green Party is preferred by five percent (unchanged).
These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 1507 adult Atlantic Canadians 18 years of age or older, conducted from August 8 to August 31, 2016, with overall results accurate to within ± 2.5 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
