Danny Williams’ Personal Popularity Reaches New High

HALIFAX: PC leader Danny Williams’ personal popularity has increased and reached a new recorded high, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Presently, approximately eight in ten (78%, up from 74% in May 2006) NL residents name Williams as their choice for Premier.  One in ten (9%, unchanged) back the new leader of the Liberal Party, Gerry Reid, and backing for NDP leader Lorraine Michael is unchanged at 4 percent.  Nine percent (down from 12% three months ago) like none of these leaders, prefer others, or have no definite opinion.

Voter support for the ruling Progressive Conservative government has not changed in the past three months, with the PCs garnering the support of three-quarters (73%, unchanged since May 2006) of decided Newfoundland and Labrador residents.  Approximately two in ten (18%, compared with 17%) residents back the Liberals and 7 percent (compared with 6%) would vote for the NDP.  The remaining 2 percent (compared with 3%) of residents support none of these parties, do not plan to vote, or favour others.  The number of Newfoundland residents who are undecided or refuse to state a preference is stable at 18 percent (compared with 17% three months ago).

Overall satisfaction with the performance of the PC government remains very high.  Presently, nine in ten residents are completely (28%, down from 33% in May 2006) or mostly (61%, up from 54%) satisfied with the performance of the provincial government.  One in ten are mostly (8%, compared with 6%) or completely (2%, compared with 3%) dissatisfied.  The remaining 1 percent (compared with 3% three months ago) do not offer a definite opinion at this time.

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly, an independent survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 412 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents.  The survey was conducted from August 12 to September 1, 2006, with results for the province accurate to within (4.8 percentage points in 95 out of 100 samples.
