Consumer Confidence in Halifax Highest Among Four Maritime Cities
HALIFAX: Currently Halifax Nova Scotia has the highest consumer confidence index compared to three other major maritime urban cities, according to the most recent Urban Report Survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. Specifically, consumer confidence in Halifax rests at 102.6 compared with Saint John at 93.4 which has the lowest confidence level of all four maritime cities tracked by CRA on a quarterly basis. Meanwhile, confidence in Moncton stands at 98.7 and Fredericton 99.7.
Consumer confidence in the region has shifted dramatically over the last year for some municipalities. Residents in Moncton saw the largest shift in confidence, down 7 points from last quarter but still up 8.8 points compared with this time last year. Confidence in Saint John is similar to last quarter however a increase of 12.9 points is noted from August of 2012. Halifax and Fredericton both show increases in confidence this quarter compared to last, up 3.5 and 3.1 points respectively.
“Generally speaking, consumer confidence is usually higher in urban areas than for individual provinces overall.” according to Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates, Inc. “This reflects better economic conditions in urban centers relative to rural parts of the Maritimes.”
Corporate Research Associates Inc. has been tracking consumer confidence in the Atlantic region for nearly 25 years and will be releasing results quarterly from this point forward, as a key economic indicator for each of the four maritime cities currently tracked.
These results are part of the CRA Urban Report, an independent survey of Halifax Regional Municipality, Saint John, Moncton and Fredericton residents. The results are based on an adult sample of 405 Halifax Regional Municipality, 400 Saint John, 400 Moncton, and 400 Fredericton residents, conducted from July 22 to August 5, 2013, with results accurate to within ±4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
