Atlantic Canadians strongly support medically assisted dying in Canada

HALIFAX, NS June 21, 2016: A strong majority of Atlantic Canadians support medically assisted dying in Canada as an option for end of life care, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc.

Recently, the federal government passed legislation that allows physician-assisted dying in Canada for those whose death is reasonably foreseeable. In Atlantic Canada, three-quarters of residents (77%) completely or mostly support medically assisted dying in Canada as an option for end of life care, while one in six (16%) mostly or completely oppose, and seven percent do not know or do not offer an opinion on the matter.

Opinions on medically assisted dying differs by province with support lower in Prince Edward Island compared to elsewhere in Atlantic Canada. Meanwhile across the population, younger residents, those in the highest household income category, and residents with higher levels of education are more likely to support medically assisted dying in the country.

“Based on the overwhelming support for medically assisted dying, it would appear that Atlantic Canadians as a whole are comfortable with having such an option available when circumstances warrant such action,” said Don Mills, Chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates.

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly®, an independent, quarterly survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a telephone sample of 1502 adult Atlantic Canadians, conducted from May 6 to June 1, 2016, with overall results accurate to within ± 2.5 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
