Strong Support for Second Nuclear Reactor at Point Lepreau
HALIFAX: Nearly three-in-four Saint John and surrounding area residents completely (30%) or mostly (42%) support building a second nuclear reactor in New Brunswick, according to a recent survey undertaken by Corporate Research Associates Inc. (CRA) as part of its Saint John Urban Report. In a 2003 CRA survey comprising all of New Brunswick, just over half of New Brunswickers supported such an endeavor.
Support for building a second nuclear reactor is strong in Saint John, with almost three-in-four residents supporting the project (73%). The areas surrounding Saint John also strongly support the second reactor (71%).
Support goes up as education levels increase, as those who have completed post-secondary education voice the most support for building a second nuclear reactor (79%). Support also increases as income levels increase, with higher support from those with household incomes above $75,000 annually (81%), compared to those with household incomes less than $50,000 annually (66%).
These results are part of the Saint John Urban Report, an independent survey of residents from Saint John and surrounding areas, and are based on a sample of 400 adult residents, conducted between September 6 and September 19, 2007. The results are considered accurate with +4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.

| QUESTION PREAMBLE: As you may be aware, NB Power currently operates a nuclear reactor at Point Lepreau, and is considering building a second nuclear reactor in the province. Those in favour of a second reactor state the reactor will reduce New Brunswick greenhouse gas emissions and provide New Brunswick with a safe, long-term source of energy, while others believe a nuclear reactor should not be built because of the radioactive waste produced by such a reactor.
QUESTION: All things considered, would you personally completely support, mostly support, mostly oppose, or completely oppose a second nuclear reactor being built in New Brunswick? |
